I've discovered a wonderful book that explains mantra brilliantly.
Healing Mantras- Thomas Ashley-Farrand.
Here are some truths about Mantra that Thomas says are important to remember:
1. Mantras are energy based sounds
2. Mantras are also chakra-based sounds
3. Mantra-combined with intention- increases physical and spiritual benefits
4. Mantras have only an approximate Language-based translation
5. Mantras energizes prana
6. Mantras are energy that can be likened to fire
Mantra helps to create a lighter clearer you.
It is beneficial to clear the heart center before doing any mantra. Learn it by "heart" and you can use it anywhere doing times of difficulty. Create your own harmony and feel the peace rush over you. This mantra comes from Tibetan Buddhism and is said to calm the heart. Sit in a comfortable cross leg seat or on a chair. Place hands in lap. If you are a woman, the right hand is on top of left. If you are a man the left hand sits on top of the right. Repeat 9 times or any increment of 9.

FEBRUARY 2006
This year I have begun to add mantra back into our class practice. I learned this mantra from two amazing teachers that are gurus to me. Sharon Gannnon and Tias little. Thanks to them I have been re-inspired to add the wonderful healing power of mantra my classes.
LOKAH SAMASTA SUKHINO BHAVANTU
May all beings everywhere be happy and free and may the thoughts and actions of my own life contribute in some way to that happiness and to that freedom for all.
JANUARY 2006
Let's begin this new year with using our mantra to help the planet. When we focus on nurturing the planet, we automatically nurture ourselves.
Om Vajra Sattwa Hung
(om vahj-rah saht-wah Hoong)
Sit visualizing a white meditative figure above one's head about one foot. Feel beams of white light pouring into your head from this figure into the top of your head.
To use this mantra for the planet, chant it as you see the Earth releasing the gunk humanity has created into the consuming energy of sunlight. The energy of sunlight cleanses the aura of the Earth every day. By our conscious efforts, we are quickening and concentrating this process.
DECEMBER 2005
This mantra is for abundance! This is a very powerful mantra.
If you can commit to doing it for forty days in a row, at 108 rounds it will have more power. Otherwise, just say it as often as possible. It will still help you process a new level of energy related to your needs.
Om Shrim Maha Lakshmiyei Swaha
(Om Shreem Mah-Ha Lshksh-Mee-Yei Swaha)
Om= will
Shrim= Abundance
Maha= Great
Lakshmi= Goddess of Abundance
Swaha= "I Salute"
